The FAQ mentions DS-DS communications however all of the posts I have read only mention access points. Has anyone done wireless multiplayer without using an AP? Is it even possible with DSWifi yet?

If so, what is the proper way to do this? Set the parent in listen mode and ask for some sort of game id message upon each connection?

As far as I know, DS to DS communication (adhoc) is currently impossible.

sgstair, is there an ETA on this type of communication? You have done some amazing work. Now, I think this is the most important thing to add next. Wireless multiplayer can really give homebrew a shot in the arm. If there is anything specific getting in the way, however technical, please ask. Maybe we can help.

Try out MightyMax's liblobby. It works without an AP. Best to use an SVN client to download it.
