I'm a n00b here, but I couldn't get an answer anywhere.

I got a modded PS1 from my friend.

But...The controller ports don't work...

It doesn't acknowledge the controller is even THERE.

Any ideas on fixing it?

Find another PS1 and switch the controller Ports, It easily comes off.

Tried...Model 7501 to 5500 (The broken one) doesn't seem to work.

buy a new ps1 or get a ps2 or even a ps3? >_> best advise i have...
