I recently heard that you can play games for other consoles on your computer such as Nintendo 64, gameboy, and etc via something called ROMs. I know that there are sites that you can download roms off of but I was wondering how to make a rom myself since I have a few N64 games that aren't available on the net for download. If anyone could tell me what I have to do to make a rom out of a game I would be very thankful.

ROM dumping isn't easy. Here's a little FAQ: http://www.smiff.clara.net/beginner/roms.htm#1
In order to do that, you have to get a device (illegal now I think) and connect it to your PC. The N64 cartridge is placed in it and it dumps the ROM. |

Most backup units are external devices that are locked on top of the actual console and then the cart is placed on the backup unit. They certainly don't come cheap, but it's fairly easy to dump cart games when you have the proper hardware for it.
Now, creating a ROM image from scrath is a totally different ballgame. |

So it's a cable that I connect from my N64 to my PC on the USB Port. Then there must be software the computer to use right?

I'm sure whatever hardware you use to dump the ROM comes with the software to use on your PC.
I don't know where you'd start looking for those though. |

QUOTE (v15kata @ Feb 27 2005, 08:23 PM) So it's a cable that I connect from my N64 to my PC on the USB Port. Then there must be software the computer to use right? Not just that. Like I said, you need the actual backup unit too to transfer and convert the data from the cart to a file on your PC. Of course there needs to be a cable that connects your computer to the backup unit too. And yes, the software is usually bundled with the unit itself. |
